Our Story
William Morris once said “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful” – a philosophy that we aim to bring to the 1970.
Nearly 20 years ago we bought a failing art gallery and framing business in the county of our birth, Dorset. We had no idea of what we had taken on and no clue as to how to run a business...not the most auspicious of starts!
Over the 13 years of our tenureship, we learnt a lot and turned the business around, bringing it back to life, creating a destination gallery, embedding ourself into the community and forging life-long friendships and professional relationships with many of the artists and makers we represented. In early 2020 we sold up and handed the reins over to the next owners and were grateful that we no longer had to juggle our day jobs alongside running a busy gallery!
Fast forward to 2023 and we fulfilled our life long dream of living in north west Scotland and found ourselves in Lochbay, Waternish on the Isle of Skye.
As we unpacked our belongings, created a home from the house we had bought, the seeds of an idea began to form...what if we could create a small gallery space in the annex to our home in this beautiful part of the world, sharing the work of artists and makers from across the UK with locals and the thousands of visitors that come to Skye.
We have always been passionate about supporting artists and makers and it’s a wonderful privilege to be part of their creative lives and to help them find new audiences for their work as well as helping them build a sustainable career. We get excited when we sell something on their behalf, telling their story to a prospective buyer, collaborating, and seeing ideas go from words to paintings/products and ultimately into people’s homes where they will be used, enjoyed and cherished.
We also love helping you make a home – a sanctuary from the busyness of today’s world, where the pictures you have on your walls, the ceramics you hold in your hand, the books that you read and the objects you place on your shelves create a connection between you and the artist/maker. All tell a story of your life, your home and your sense of belonging.
We hope that when you visit our small gallery that you will be inspired by what you see knowing that each and every piece has been made by an artist, craftsperson, writer and designer who has taken the leap of faith to earn their livelihood from creating work that speaks from their soul to yours.
